Switzerland, Sweden and UK: the most innovative countries in the world

Global Innovation Index 2013, published by Cornell University, INSEAD, and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is now official. The index ranks 142 economies, using 84 different indicators showing both innovation capabilities and measurable results. Switzerland keeps the top placement from the previous year, followed by, in respective order, Sweden, The United Kingdom, Netherlands and The United States.

According to WIPO, the status of global innovation is alive and well, despite the financial crisis. Research and development spending levels are surpassing those from 2008 in most countries, and successful local hubs show evidence of expansion. A few dynamic middle- and low-income countries – including China, Costa Rica, India, and Senegal – are outpacing their peers, but haven’t broken into the top of the index as of yet.
