EPO report: New record of patent applications in 2017

In their latest Annual Report, European Patent Office (EPO) states that they received an all-time high 166 000 patent applications in 2017. It is a 3,9% increase in comparison to applications received in 2016.

“In terms of patents, 2017 was a positive year for Europe,” said EPO President Benoît Battistelli.

“The growing demand for European patents confirms Europe's attractiveness as a leading technology market."

EPO published 106 000 granted European patents in 2017 - a big increase of 10,1% from the previous year.

The five most active countries for filing patents in 2017 were the US, Germany, Japan, France and China. While as most countries demonstrated an upward trend in their number of patent filings, the Republic of Korea saw applications drop after two consecutive years of increase.
